James is an independent consultant, coach, and facilitator, and runs Work Without Walls Ltd, a company focused on new ways of working and learning.
He takes an appreciative approach to his work with clients, being interested in where people are already succeeding, and in how they can do more of what they do well. He combines a warm and engaging manner with a clarity of insight, and a gentle toughness that helps clients to hear challenging feedback.
His recent work has included:
- facilitating on a range of development programmes for senior managers at PricewaterhouseCoopers, including coaching and action-learning-based programmes;
- contributing to the High Flyers Programme for PricewaterhouseCoopers Middle East practice;
- a development programme for managers at Chevron Corporation in Belgium;
- helping design and deliver a major dialogue programme for National Grid;
- developing New Leaves, a programme about rediscovering and renewing the source of one's inspiration and passion for work;
- facilitating on development centres for senior NHS managers.
James is also an associate with SOLACE Enterprises (the commercial arm of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives), where he is Head of People Development. His work there has included:
- design and delivery of the Collaborative Leadership Programme for chief executives and corporate directors of Scottish local authorities;
- personal and team development for the Cabinet and Corporate Management Team of London Borough of Sutton, through one-to-one coaching and team facilitation;
- developing “The Borough at its Best” - a process using appreciative inquiry to help corporate management teams envision and plan their future;
- programme management for Carlisle City Council's Senior Managers' Programme;
- a top team coaching programme for Bristol City Council.
James has served as a parish councillor for the community in which he lives. He has a BA (Hons) in Psychology, a Diploma in Management Studies, a Diploma in Counselling, and has completed the Advanced Training in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy.
